Welcome to Algotopia

Is it a utopia or dystopia? Or both?

Welcome to Algotopia, where tech utopian promises collide with dystopian slop in an infinite battle for your attention and loyalty.

We are all participants in a unique mass societal experiment. A constantly shifting realm that resembles reality, just a few degrees off centre.

In Algotopia, society is shaped by algorithms. Automated decision-making systems influence not only how people work, consume, and are governed, but also their physical environments, mindsets, behaviours, and personal relationships.

The algorithmic systems shape the media they encounter and the communities they form. They frame expectations, subtly influence values, and mediate how its inhabitants connect and disconnect from one another.

Algotopia is not a fixed destination. Its direction is being shaped with every swipe.

Join me as I attempt to navigate its maze of contradictions, learn how to surf the slop, and unpack the innovations shaping our Algotopian lives.

Subscribe for future slop survival drops. Money earned from paid subscriptions will be invested in projects to help offset the slop and to commission guest contributors.

DISCLAIMER

Videos and images that accompany this post are non-commercial artistic works examining algorithmic society, created using AI tools including Veo 3.1, Synthesia and Udio.
They were made to demonstrate the unpredictable and divisive nature of AI-generated content, where algorithmic systems often produce and reproduce symbols, images and sounds drawn from training datasets built on the creative intellectual property of artists, writers, musicians, filmmakers and brands – used without their authorisation to build private wealth and political influence.
No copyrighted images, brand logos, trademarks or protected intellectual property were used in the creation of these works. No prompts were given to generate specific brand identities or copyrighted material. Any images, logos, symbols or elements that resemble existing brand identities, trademarks or corporate symbols are entirely unintended, autonomous outputs generated by the AI systems themselves.
These algorithmic hallucinations illustrate how AI systems trained on vast datasets can unpredictably reproduce elements from their training data, mediating and distorting our relationship with corporate identity and power. Any AI-generated elements do not represent, imply or suggest any endorsement by, affiliation with, sponsorship from, or authorisation by any trademark or copyright holders.
No commercial use is intended or implied. These works are presented solely for artistic expression, critical commentary and educational purposes under fair dealing provisions (UK Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988, sections 30 and 30A).
